Carpentry and Joinery - Basic Construction Skills - Entry Level at Vision West Nottinghamshire College

Course description

This introductory course covers practical and job-related knowledge for a career in carpentry and joinery.

Units include: safe working practices, building methods and construction technology, and forming woodworking joints. You will also learn how to effectively use tools of the trade, including portable power tools.

Course content

The course units will cover site and bench carpentry skills, cabinet making skills and flooring skills.

You will also be required to undertake Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT.

Entry requirements

An initial assessment and aptitude test.

You will need to attend an interview with the tutor before being accepted on to the course. You may also need to supply at least one written reference from a teacher or employer (in some cases two) and/or your current school or college report.

Mature students (those aged 21 or over) who do not have the qualifications required for entry may still be eligible, subject to an interview. Relevant experience, a strong portfolio of work and a commitment to the subject you wish to study may be acceptable for certain courses.

Future opportunities

Progression is to the Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery Diploma.
