Mathematics Edexcel A Level at Lea Valley High School

Course description

Studying Mathematics A Level is a brilliant way of developing employability skills; problem solving, logic, analysing situations, basic numeracy skills, critical thinking skills and creativity.

Course content

AS Units:

  • Unit C1: Core 1
  • Unit C2: Core 2
  • Unit S1: Statistics 1 

A2 Units:

  • Unit C3: Core 3
  • Unit C4: Core 4
  • Unit M1: Mechanics 1

At AS Level you will study the following themes, algebra and functions, coordinate geometry in the (x,y) plane, sequences and series, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration, mathematical models in probability and statistics, representation and summary of data, probability, correlation and regression, discrete random variables, discrete distributions and the normal distribution.

At A2 Level you will learn more about algebra and functions, coordinate geometry in the (x,y) plane, sequences and series, differentiation, integration, vectors, mathematical models in mechanics, vectors in mechanics, kinematics of a particle moving in a straight line, dynamics of a particle moving in a straight line or plane and statics of a particle.

Entry requirements

  • 5 GCSE A* ‐ C including English Language at grade C or better
  • GCSE Mathematics at grade A or better

Assessment

The course is entirely exam based with three modules done at the end of each year.

Future opportunities

Studying A Level Mathematics could be a requirement for university courses such as Physics, Psychology, Economics, Computing, and Business Studies. Since Maths is one of the most traditional subjects, a good grade can boost an application for almost any course.
