Digital Media Advanced Technical Certificate at Derby College
This is an exciting course designed for those who are interested in using digital technology in the production of creative designs.
The course is industry led and focuses on the skills, knowledge and understanding that today’s employers demand. It includes a range of mandatory, optional and specialist pathway units, allowing you to really focus on what is right for your chosen career path.
Placing the user at the heart of the experience, you will focus on design and content creation in areas such as photo-imaging, mobile apps, games, websites, interactive guides and installations, digital comics and next generation advertising. You will learn to examine the communication of ideas in a networked world and consider the many impacts of digital media on everyday life.
The course adopts a hands-on approach to teaching and learning and allows you the freedom to explore the areas of creative media that interest you most.
The Digital Media Design course is vocationally related, industry relevant and suited to a broad range of learning styles and abilities.
The course follows a specific Digital Content for Interactive Media pathway and will equip you with a range of creative media skills. It will provide opportunities to develop, in context, desirable transferable skills such as research, planning and review, working with others and communicating creative concepts effectively.
Taught units for digital media production include graphic design, animation, photography, game development and graphic and comic storytelling.
In addition to Digital Media Design, your study programme will include future progression and life skills, enterprise, work-based activity and planning your own learning with a personal coach.
Applicants should be highly motivated and demonstrate a keen interest in the subject area. You will need:
- A minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language at grade C or above
- An Intermediate Diploma in Creative iMedia Design or a related subject to Merit or Distinction grade and English Language at grade C or above.
All applicants will be interviewed, will undertake an initial assessment in maths and English, and must present a portfolio of supporting practical work.
If you are a mature learner, we may be able to take your previous experience into consideration.
The majority of work will be assessed internally through tutor-set assignments. External assessment involves written examinations including case studies related to the digital media sector. The assessment will involve applying your knowledge and understanding to a range of industrial scenarios and contexts.
This course will allow you to progress to a variety of linked foundation and university degree courses or to gain employment.
This course provides a pathway to a career in roles such as digital layout artist, digital graphic designer, freelance reporter, web-developer/designer, animator and computer graphics modeller.
