Music A level at Boroughbridge High School

Course description

Music develops many skills such as self-discipline, team building, leadership skills, communication, self-evaluation and social skills.  It helps to build confidence and self esteem.  These skills are transferable into other areas and are important life skills.  Most of all, Music is thoroughly enjoyable and is something that enhances your life.

During the A level Music course you will have the opportunity to practise musical performance and compositional techniques.  You will develop listening and analytical skills with reference to a diverse range of set works.  You will be given the opportunity to perform in a variety of live concerts as both soloist and as part of an ensemble.  You will also have the opportunity to hear your compositions performed in front of a live audience.

You will have access to the most up to date equipment, software and facilities in a purpose built Music block during the course.  You will have priority at lunchtimes for the use of individual rooms within the Music block as well as the equipment housed within these rooms.

The Music block contains:

  • one large rehearsal room/classroom
  • three practice rooms equipped with piano/drum kit/computer software
  • Seven MacBooks with Cubase, Garage Band and Sibellius Software
  • A selection of instruments, including electronic keyboards, ukeleles, guitars and percussion

You will be offered free instrumental tuition whilst on the course and will be invited to join in with extra-curricular activities.  Activities on offer are: Swing Band, Chamber Group, Whole School Choir, Chamber Choir and AMP Awards bands.

Entry requirements

The study of GCSE Music is an advantage, but providing that you can demonstrate an appropriate level of musicianship, it is not essential.  You should be at least Grade 5 standard on an instrument or voice by the end of the course, and will be able to continue lessons in order to reach this standard.
