Course description

Taught in our industry standard vehicle workshops using the latest specialist equipment you will be introduced you to a wide range of vehicle systems and includes working on College cars as well as engine rigs. If you want to pursue a career as a mechanic, this would be the ideal place to start. 
Our Automotive qualifications can help you to progress in a wide range of roles within the industry including careers as a car, truck or motorbike mechanic/technician or perhaps into associated industries such as motor vehicle body repairer/refinisher/builder or parts supply.
Successful completion of the Level 1 programme may lead to the next Level programme or an apprenticeship. This is dependent upon full completion of all units of the current qualification and satisfactory conduct and attendance throughout the year.
During this course, you will learn: how to identify and repair faults on light and heavy vehicles, how to complete a basic service on a car and offer you the chance to explore vehicle systems such as brakes; steering; suspension and engines and learn about specialist tools and fabrication techniques as part of a workshop processes unit.

Entry requirements

You don’t need any formal qualifications to apply however the nature of both the learning and assessment required for the qualification is such that you will need literacy and numeracy skills. An ability to understand and carry out exact instructions is essential due to the nature of the activities. You will also be required to pass a trade test as-well as a literacy and numeracy test.
You will be required to attend an interview and provide a reference (from an employer or recent school/college report).


Assessment is a combination of practical tests and written examinations.
