Drama and Theatre Studies A Level at Shenley Brook End School

Course description

The course is structured in a very practical sense, focusing as it does on the elements of drama in performance and the application of practitioners’ ideologies rather than simply looking at them as clinical theories. It combines the theoretical and textual work with practical experiences of theatre and writers, looking at styles and genres from ancient Greek theatre to modern and postmodern production techniques and values. Students of theatre will study several plays in a series of workshops and theatre visits.  They will also present performances for examiners and a complete written examination on their experiences and knowledge of drama and theatre.

Course content

This course builds on the skills learned at GCSE Drama, but is also accessible for students with a practical imagination and a good grade at GCSE English.

Component 3: Theatre Makers in Practice

Entry requirements

Drama and Theatre Studies require a large range of skills, even in the written components. It is about practical work – performances, application of practitioners’ theories, coping with different challenges – and so requires people who can describe the practical work in written format. Students with a good drama GCSE grade will find the course very accessible and will have built a good base of knowledge from which to approach the course.

This course will require students to be present at all rehearsals and be prepared to attend rehearsals outside of school hours. The course is collaborative so students must be fully committed to the group and rehearsals as the attainment of each individual can be dependent on a ‘whole-group’ approach.  Students wi
ll also be required to attend theatre visits.  A grade B in drama and B in English GCSE is advisable.


A written portfolio or verbal presentation, a devised performance or design realisation. A group performance of an extract from a scripted performance text or design realisation, a monologue/duologue performance or design realisation of an extract from a different performance text, both externally assessed by visiting examiners.  

A two and a half hour written examination on a live theatre evaluation and practical
exploration of two complete set play texts.
