With an emphasis on abstract thinking, general problem solving, algorithmic and mathematical reasoning, scientific and engineering-based thinking, Computing opens the door to a wide range of careers and further study, both with universities and colleges, IT companies and those who use computers in industry, commerce, the armed services and government service. Roles span technical innovation, management, analysis, consultancy, training and research. Employers range from small companies to large multinationals with much scope for work and travel abroad.
At the heart of Computer Science lies the notion of computational thinking: a mode of thought that goes well beyond software and hardware, and that provides a framework within which to reason about systems and problems. Learners will develop an ability to analyse, critically evaluate and make decisions. Computer Science is a practical subject where learners can apply the academic principles learned in the classroom to real world systems. The project element is a vital component which is relevant to further education, higher education and the workplace where students can tailor it to suit their own individual needs, choices and aspirations. Through this qualification, students can develop an understanding of and ability to apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science including: abstraction, decomposition, logic, algorithms and data representation; the ability to analyse problems in computational terms through practical experience of solving such problems including writing programs to do so; the ability to articulate the individual (moral), social (ethical), legal and cultural opportunities and risks of digital technology.
