Media Studies A2 Level at The Astley Cooper School

Course description

This course entails the study of a variety of texts, such as film, television, print and new media. For A2, you will create your cross media promotional package for the release of a new music album. This includes creating an album cover, magazine advertisement and music video. For your exam, you will evaluate your coursework in terms of real media texts and companies. You will also study two contemporary media issues, such as global media, media and collective identity and media in the online age. How is the course examined or assessed? This course is assessed through written examinations and coursework: A2 50% coursework 50% written examination (2 hours) Additional Information This course is dependent on your being able to put your ideas and opinions in writing. It would suit you if you would like to understand how media texts are made and communicated with audiences. However, you must be able to construct an argument through essay style answers, write organised and coherent essays and analyse a range of different types of texts. Skills in ICT are also very helpful.

Future opportunities

This course is a good grounding for studying a variety of theoretical and practical courses at university. You could also pursue in-house training. Possible careers in media are: - journalism, print, broadcasting and new media technologies including reporting, editing, production and design; - research, government/civil service, industry, market trends and media; - public relations (press officer); - publishing; - media production.You will follow this course with two or three other AS/A2 levels or an Advanced Diploma and, additionally, the compulsory core such as PSHE, RE, PE/Games.
