Course description

BTEC Foundation Diploma (540GLH) 1.5 A-level equivalent


The Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Sport course consists of 4 mandatory units of which 2 are externally assessed as well as 3 optional units. The course gives your son knowledge of human anatomy and its adaptations to exercise; how to analyse the health of a client and provide recommendations for improvements; explores the knowledge and skills required for different career pathways in sport; develops different leadership techniques, coaching strategies to be able to deliver coaching session to groups; to understand the requirements of different fitness tests and how to administer them safely; and the practical application of different skills, techniques and rules for sports.


Students studying this course need to be well organised, good at working to deadlines and be interested in sports or leisure.

Course content

Mandatory Units

      • Anatomy & Physiology (1 hour 30 minute written exam)
      • Fitness Training & Programming for Health, Sport & Well-Being Exercise, Health and Lifestyle (2 hour controlled assessment)
      • Professional Development in the Sports Industry
      • Sports Leadership

Optional Units (x3)

      • Application of Fitness Testing
      • Practical Sports Performance
      • Coaching for Performance



Entry requirements

Level 2 BTEC in Sport (Merit) or GCSE Physical Education (5 grade)


 Written exam, controlled assessment, assignment based
