Course description

This course will help you develop the skills that are essential if you wish to pursue a career in design. These will include the ability to generate ideas to meet different design briefs and expanding your creative approaches through the imaginative use of media and equipment. You will also learn how to develop your ideas and refine your ideas into outcomes that you can present and discuss with staff and students in a professional manner in preparation for the demands of Higher Education and working in the Creative Industries. In addition to developing your technical and creative skills the course will also offer you other experiences that will develop you as a designer and as an independent creative individual. This will include lectures dealing with the work of contemporary and historical artists and designers, organisational skills, working with professional briefs for external clients, visiting galleries and exhibitions to keep you updated with contemporary art and design and residentials which will expose you to design from different cultures and creative specialisms.

Course content

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in General Art and Design course is aimed at students who want to pursue a career in art and design study. This course will help you make a decision about the area of art and design you wish to specialise in by introducing you to a broad range of art and design subjects and approaches. You will learn specific techniques, creative approaches and make work in the areas of Fashion, Textiles, Graphics, Electronic Art, Photography, Fine Art and Life Drawing. You will also broaden your approaches to making art work as you begin to learn about different media, processes and creative ideas. As the course develops we will encourage you to combine different elements from the various course subjects to begin to create more personal and refined work. Your practical skills and technical knowledge will be enriched by your developing understanding of the work of other artists and designers – how and why they make their work and how this can help inspire your own approaches to your work. The course will help you develop this aspect of your knowledge through practical projects, gallery visits, essays, workshops and residentials. In the second year of the course you will begin to identify the area of art and design that you intend to pursue as a career through study at university or job application and choose which specialisms you want to explore in greater depth. You will receive full support and advice from course staff in your application to university and in the preparation and presentation of your university interview portfolio. The final part of the course will give you the chance to design a project working in your chosen specialism with your own ideas and themes. You will exhibit this project in the South Cheshire College End of Year Show.
