# IBDP Mathematics at Broadgreen International School

## Course description

The following Mathematics courses are available:

• Mathematical Studies Standard Level

• Mathematics Standard Level

• Mathematics Higher Level

These three courses serve to accommodate the range of needs, interests and abilities of students, and to fulfil the mathematical requirements of various university courses and career paths.

**Mathematical Studies **caters for students with varied backgrounds and abilities who do not anticipate a need for mathematics in future studies.

**Mathematics Standard Level** caters for students with a sound mathematical background, who are studying subjects such as chemistry, physics and psychology.

**Mathematics Higher Level** caters for students with a flair for maths, who are competent in a range of analytical and technical skills. These students will be expecting to include mathematics as a major component of their university studies.

## Course content

The aims of these courses are to enable students to:

• Develop mathematical knowledge, concepts and principles

• Develop logical, critical and creative thinking

• Employ and refine their powers of abstraction and generalisation

• Appreciate the multicultural and historical perspective of mathematics

Mathematical Studies consists of:

• Number and algebra

• Descriptive statistics

• Logic, sets and probability

• Statistical applications

• Geometry and trigonometry

• Mathematical models

• Introduction to differential calculus

• Project

Standard Level maths consists of:

• Algebra

• Functions and equations

• Circular functions and trigonometry

• Vectors

• Statistics and probability

• Calculus

• Mathematical exploration

• Options – students must pick from one of the following options

• Statistics and probability

• Sets, relations and groups

• Calculus

• Discrete mathematics

## Entry requirements

Grades A*-C in at least 6 GCSE subjects. Of these, English and Maths must be at Grade C or above. As well as an academic requirement, we expect you to demonstrate an interest in world events and a commitment to making a difference in your community. World citizenship is at the heart of the IB philosophy and we will be discussing your interests, experiences and aspirations at your interview.
