Mathematics AS/A-Level at The Appleton School

Course description

Mathematics is the abstract study of topics such as quantity, structure, space and change. Study of Mathematics will enhance problem solving skills, communication skills, reasoning and making connections. A significant proportion of the course is Algebra based and being able to work confidently with equations and graphs is crucial. To achieve the higher grades in this course you must be prepared to put in the hours of work.

Course content

Students will take three units, each equally weighted. Two of these are Core Mathematics 1 and Core Mathematics 2, which are Algebra based. The third unit is an application which will be Statistics or Mechanics.

Students will take three further units which are Core Mathematics 3 and Core Mathematics 4, and an application. The core units are an extension of the Mathematics covered in the first year.


All units are assessed by an examination of 1 hour and 30 minutes.  There is no coursework element.  Calculators are not permitted in the Core Mathematics 1 examination. Three units   are assessed at the end of year 12 and three at the end of year 13.
