History (Pre-U) at Somervale School
The Cambridge Pre-U is a challenging, wellrespected qualification for students interested in learning about the past and developing their analyitical, research and written communication skills. The Pre-U is an A Level Equivalent which we began to offer alongside the traditional A Level in 2009. The course is equally as accessible as the traditional A Level, but with the capacity to achieve beyond an A*. The course is widely recognised as a rigorous, well-taught and worthwhile qualification. The Pre-U is a 2 year linear course which students cannot drop at the end of Year 12, as all examinations take place at the end of Year 13. Therefore students should be sure of their commitment to the subject before embarking on the Pre-U.
Grade B in GCSE History.
If History not taken at GCSE than a Grade B in English Language.
The list of occupations and prospects is endless. Studying History provides more than knowledge and understanding of the key events. It provides each student the essential skills required to succeed in any occupation, course or apprenticeship. Having a qualification in History at this level is regarded as prestigious and admirable.
Who Might the Course Suit?
This course would suit the more independent learner as it involves wider reading and research. The course is no more difficult than the traditional A Level; whereas A Levels are graded at A*-E, the Pre-U is graded at Distinction to Pass, which covers the full A*-E range. Therefore the course will be accessible to all students who achieve a grade B or above at History or English Language GCSE. However, the course is linear with all exams taking place at the end of Year 13, so should not be taken by students who are likely to drop the subject at the end of Year 12.
