Religious Studies—Philosophy and Ethics AS/A2 Level at Deyes High School
Philosophy and Ethics offers you the chance to explore some of the ultimate questions about life and the way we live it. As part of your studies you will consider questions such as, ‘How did we get here?’ ‘Why are we here?’ ‘What rules should we govern ourselves by?’ and, ‘Are there such things as right and wrong?’
By choosing to study Philosophy and Ethics at Deyes, you will be supported by an experienced and motivated team of teachers, who have an excellent history of helping students to not only achieve, but in many cases, exceed their target grades.
We pride ourselves on being able to offer our students a range of lessons that include group debates, individual and group research projects, watching documentary material, working creatively to develop your own study materials and many more. Philosophy and Ethics is divided into three subject areas at AS Level.
The units covered are:
Philosophy Arguments for the existence of God. The problem of evil.
Ethics Religion and morality. Utilitarianism. War and peace.
Medical Ethics What makes someone a person?. How should decisions in medical ethics be made and by whom? The issue of Patient Autonomy.
At A2, we cover:
Philosophy Is it reasonable to believe in life after death? Religious experience. The Ontological argument.
Ethics Meta Ethics. Deontology. Virtue Ethics. Kantian Ethics.
Grade B in Religious Studies if taken, with Grade C in English and Maths.
As one of the oldest academic subjects, Philosophy and Ethics is a highly respected qualification by all of the leading universities and so an A Level in this subject can open many doors.
Many students who take Philosophy and Ethics go on to have careers in journalism, the law, media, medicine, teaching and social work.
