Course content

Double award – 2 A levels - Two year course.  

The qualification is an A level graded A to E. Students will study 6 units and will be awarded 1 A level.  This A level builds on the single award in Applied Business so students study three more/different units for the double award.  It is a respected qualification for students seeking to further their education at University or want to enter the world of work – and would suit students who prefer coursework to exams.  

No matter what your vision, this Business A Level course launches you onto the road to becoming a successful employee or employer.  All the key topics of starting and running a business are covered.  Armed with this knowledge, maybe you could be giving Bill Gates a run for his money or start a business from home.  Of course not everybody wants to run a global corporation but you will gain a qualification that will prepare you for university and will give you a competitive edge in the world of work.

Entry requirements

It is not essential that you have studied Business before.

Assessment

SPECIFICATION AND UNITS OF STUDY

Students’ work is evaluated through a combination of written examinations and internally assessed coursework.  The following units are studied during the two years; students produce mainly  coursework but will have 3 external assessments over the 2 years.

Topics studied include Career planning, Marketing/promotion, Human Resources (recruitment, management styles, motivation at work, Business Plans, Finance (cash flows, budgets, business plans, breakeven analysis) Customer Service, Structure & Organisation of business, Developing a product.

• Example Unit - Career Planning: You will be offered a clear process which you can follow to help you find out the opportunities that are available and the types of job which is likely to suit your personal skills profile and the skills and knowledge that you have gained from your studies to date.

Future opportunities

WHERE CAN THE COURSE LEAD?

This is a well-respected qualification from which students go on to University (previous pupils have gone on to take degrees in Marketing, Business Management, International Business, and Computer science) or careers in the Police, Retail, Banking, Leisure, Business, Human Resources or Customer Service.  

The qualification would suit students who enjoy or would like to develop, a more independent style of learning.  This style of learning is good preparation of university/college.  This A level in Applied Business compliments ALL other AS/A2 levels including ICT, English, Maths, Law, Accounts, D & T, Psychology, History & Geography.  The work involves researching a wide range of businesses and different aspects of organisations.  Pupils have Internet access to carry out research as well as programs commonly used in business – Word, Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint - to prepare business plans, reports, cash flows and presentations.

This qualification develops a range of transferable skills vital to success in the world of work including taking responsibility for one’s own learning, undertaking calculations, analysing & interpreting data, developing & supporting  arguments, decision-making, research skills and identifying a problem and making recommendations.
