Course content

What will I study during the AS course & how will it be assessed?

This is a modular course and candidates study three units in the AS year. Unit results are combined to give an overall grade.

Two units are examined via end-of-unit tests:

• Foundation Chemistry which builds on GCSE knowledge and includes study of atomic structure, isotopes, bonding, Periodic Table, crude oil and organic chemistry.

• Chemistry in Action which covers rate of reaction, halogens and redox, extraction of metals and further develops organic chemistry.

One unit is tested internally:

• Investigative and Practical Skills which develops observation, measuring, analysing and evaluating skills. What will I study during the A2 course & how will it be assessed?

Three units are covered in the A2 year. Unit results are combined with AS units to give an overall grade. Two units are examined via end-of-unit tests:

• Kinetic, Equilibria and Organic Chemistry which includes study of acids and bases and builds on AS knowledge of organic chemistry.

• Energetics, Redox and Inorganic Chemistry which covers thermodynamics, periodicity, redox equilibria and general properties of transition metals.

One unit is tested internally:

• Investigative and Practical Skills which further develops observation, measuring, analysing and evaluating skills.
