## Course description

There are 3 papers. Each paper consists of a 2 hour written examination, each contributing 33% of the A Level qualification.

Papers 1 & 2

Paper 3

This paper has two sections of equal weighting.

Section A: Statistics

- Statistical sampling

- Data presentation and Interpretation

- Probability

- Statistical distributions

- Statistical hypothesis testing

Section B: Mechanics:

- Vectors

- Quantities and units in mechanics

- Kinematics

- Forces and Newton’s laws

- Moments

## Course content

Papers 1 & 2

This course builds on the skills taught at the higher end of GCSE Mathematics. Students will extend the use and application of their GCSE knowledge and problem solving skills through: functions, straight line graphs, quadratics, simultaneous equations and surds.
The pure content continues to evolve throughout and students’ knowledge is taken to a higher level as they encounter, for the first time; series, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms. Students should look forward to the prospect of meeting calculus at
the end of this unit and learning strategies for when functions cannot be easily differentiated.

Paper 3 - Section A: Statistics

This module builds on the statistics and probability skills learned at GCSE and applies them in a much more in-depth and practical context. Probability consists of practical contexts involving arrangements as well as normal and binomial distributions. Statistical
distributions investigates the relationships between data sets using correlation and regression to make future predictions. Hypothesis testing is a vitally important topic looking at areas such as drug trials and whether or not they are effective.

Paper 3 - Section B: Mechanics

The course allows students to use and apply mathematical modelling to solve real-life problems: how high can a stone be thrown, what angle is required for books to slip off a shelf, what direction and velocity will a helicopter/ship have to travel to intercept
a moving object, where should weights be placed to balance beams, what angle can my ladder safely be inclined at to prevent it from slipping etc
