Drama and Theatre Studies at Retford Oaks Academy

Course description

2 Units at 'AS' level, including:

Unit 1 requires to explore and perform extracts from a text, and to devise their own piece of drama based on the same text whist showing understanding of two Drama Practitioners.

Unit 2 is an externally assessed written examination based on two plays, one pre-1900 and one post- 1900. Questions will be based on the candidates' ability to interpret roles on stage, discuss atmosphere and staging potential, and reflect on the way the play was originally performed.

2 Units at 'A2' level, including:

Unit 3 aims to build on and develop the performance skills gained at AS level. Students will need to build a performance around a chosen theme that includes both the use of text and devised elements. The performance will be assessed by a visiting external examiner.

Unit 4 is an externally assessed written examination split into two sections. Section A requires students to answer questions based on 2 set texts, whilst section B asks students to analyse the performance potential of an unseen extract from a play.

Entry requirements

AS': GCSE grade C Drama / BTEC Merit Performing Arts preferable. At least grade C in GCSE English 'A2': At least grade D in 'AS' Drama and Theatre Studies
