Early Years Education and Care (Early Years Educator) CACHE Level 3 Diploma at Epping Forest College

Course description

This course will prepare you to become an Early Year Educator working with children under 5 years of age and gaining knowledge of children aged 5 to 7 years. The syllabus explore a range of themes including:

  • Health and Well-being
  • Legislation
  • Frameworks and Professional Practice
  • Play, Development and Learning for School Readiness
  • Professional Development.

As part of this course you will work in an Early Years setting for 2 days a week to develop your practical skills. We will support you in finding a placement and monitor your progress. If you would enjoy caring for children and helping them learn, this could be a rewarding career path leading directly to employment or to Higher Education.

There will be opportunities to take part in charity fundraising, educational trips and talks by guest speakers.

Course content

The course is made up of several units and topics, for example:

  • Emotional Well-being
  • Healthy Lifestyles
  • Speech, Language and Communication
  • Safeguarding

This course requires you to have at least a grade C in GCSE English and Maths. English & Maths is still included as part of your study programme at EFC and we will work with you to develop your literacy and numeracy skills further throughout the year.

Work experience is a mandatory part of the course. You will gain valuable experience as a trainee childcare worker, building up practical skills and gaining confidence when working with children.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs grade A*–C inc. English & Maths* To be a Primary School Teacher one of these GCSEs must be in a Science subject. Consideration will be given to those with D grade in Language.

Assessment

Assessment is through college-marked assignments, 2 externally marked essays and 1 exam. Your knowledge, competence and practical skills will also be assessed by observations of you working in placement.

Financial information

You will need basic student stationery, college logo polo-shirts and fleece jacket and a course book.

Future opportunities

The qualification will enable you to become an Early Years practitioner with a licence to practice (along with Maths and English A-C which is a government requirement). The UCAS points could also take you to university to study Primary Education or for an Early Years Foundation degree.

There are lots of different options to continue your studies after level 3 qualifications. These include specialised vocational degrees, Honours Degrees (usually 3 year courses, although they may include a sandwich year on work placement).

It is very important to find out about all of your options after you have completed your course. Some careers will require specific qualifications and training for you to work in the sector, whereas other jobs and careers do not have a set training route.

      Once on site you can have access to our catering facilities (subject to agreement) and a range of rooms, 
      from our Theatre, with 264 retractable seats, to a standard classroom.

      We also have full IT support, and can offer rooms with either Macs or PCs running the latest industry-standard software.
