First Steps into Sport, Health and Fitness VTCT Level 1 at Wirral Metropolitan College

Course description

Students on Level 1 First Steps into Sport, Health and Fitness will study the VTCT Level 1 Certificate in Sport and Active Leisure Studies qualification.

This qualification has been specifically designed for the 16-19 age group and will provide an introduction to sport and active leisure.

The content covers a broad base of sport and active leisure related topics and will allow progression to further learning at Level 2 or an apprenticeship.

Course content

Students will develop the requisite knowledge and skills needed to plan own fitness regimes, to plan and assist in the leading of activity sessions and will be encouraged to take part in regular exercise.

Students will also be introduced to how the body works, lifestyle management, healthy eating, working in sport and active leisure and the variety of job opportunities available.

In addition students will have opportunity to work with customers and gain insight into their work rights and responsibilities.

Entry requirements

Priority will be given to those aged 16-18 with a genuine interest in pursuing a career in sport, health and fitness. No formal qualifications are required.


This course is assessed using a variety of methods including tutor-observations of practical activities, worksheets, presentations etc.

Financial information

There will be an additional charge for course uniform, trips and visits which will be in the region of £100. Details of these will be given at interview.

Future opportunities

There are various possible progressions routes available on successful completion of this course including VTCT Level 2 Fitness Instructor, BTEC Level 2 Sport, NCFE Military Preparation.
