Sociology AS/ A Level at Dixons City Academy

Course description

Sociology is in essence the study of people in society.  It examines the values, attitudes, culture and organisation of the society in which we live and how that influences our social behaviour.  Sociologists are interested in how people interact in social situations, ranging from small groups to large institutions.

Course content

Students will study one topic from each of the following two modules:

Module 1:

Families & Households.

Wealth, Poverty and Welfare.

Culture And Identity.

Module 2:

Education and Sociological Methods.

Health and Sociological Methods.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at Grade C, with Grade B in English Language.  A humanities background can be useful although not essential.  Students must however be interested in the social world, including current affairs.

Students who study Sociology have gone on to a vast variety of degree courses and have accessed a full range of universities. Sociology is an excellent preparation for any degree or career.
