Physics at Merchant Taylors' Girls' School

Course description

Physics A level is a useful basis for many scientific careers. With or without Mathematics, Physics A level is a highly regarded, marketable qualification for any career. It is extremely useful for studies in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science or any other science. If studied with Mathematics it could lead to a course in Physics itself, in a branch of engineering, architecture, medical physics, geophysics, astrophysics or to a career researching alternative sources of energy or in health and safety. The mathematical modelling techniques learned are invaluable for a career in finance.

We follow AQA Physics Specification A. A level Physics considers many of the topics from GCSE Physics but in greater depth leading to a deeper understanding of the principles involved.

Entry requirements

Minimum grades required are an A in both GCSE Physics and Mathematics or an A grade in both Core and Additional Science.

Any student wishing to progress to A level Physics without having studied GCSE Physics will need to complete extra study during the summer holidays before embarking on the AS course.

Any student who may wish to study Physics or Engineering at university must also take A level Mathematics.
