QCF Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools at Appleby Heritage Centre

Course description

For those who would like to work in a primary, special school or secondary school as a teaching or classroom assistant, supporting the teacher paid or unpaid.




Course content

Each week consists of a tutorial session at the Heritage Centre with an additional one day (or two half days) in a primary or secondary school classroom environment.


Level 2 Certificate


This knowledge based qualification is for those who wish to work within the classroom supporting the teaching and learning of pupils. It seeks to develop the knowledge and understanding that all those working in a school setting will need and covers areas such as safeguarding, communication and relationships, child development and understanding the school context. It is a knowledge based qualification, it can be taken by learners not yet employed in a school, as well as providing initial training/induction for those new in post.


Level 3 Certificate/Diploma



Certificate - for those members of the school workforce who directly support the teaching and learning of pupils. Covering the generic knowledge and skills required to work in a teaching assistant or similar role at Level 3.


Diploma - as per the certificate but for those with specialist roles such as supporting students with special needs or supporting bilingual pupils.


Entry requirements


Students must be at least 16 years old, with a good basic general education and preferably some experience in the school environment.



You will be required to attend tutorials, and a work placement one day (or two half days) per week where you will be assessed and complete a portfolio of evidence.
