Applied Science (90 Credits) Level 3 Diploma at Darlington College

Course description

This course is designed to provide you with work specific skills if you are wanting to work in scientific laboratories, including Forensic Science, Environmental Pharmaceutical and general science laboratories. It is highly practical and you will learn many techniques that are standard practice in general laboratories.

By studying on this course, it can potentially open up exciting employment opportunities in cutting edge scientific workplaces, with the possibility of further study which can lead on to higher vocational qualifications.

If you have not achieved a C grade or above in English or maths, you will as part of your course be required to work towards this as part of your study programme.  You will be given the opportunity to go on work experience at certain times during your course.

To develop your employability opportunities you may also be given enrichment classes. This may focus upon additional qualifications, industrial updating and career preparation.

Course content

Six mandatory units, which include:

  • Fundamentals of science
  • Scientific practical techniques
  • Using mathematical tools in science
  • Working in the science industry
  • Perceptions of science
  • Scientific investigations

There will be optional units which will be decided by the college. These can be discussed at interview.

Entry requirements

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade A*-C, including maths and English, as well as a science based subject. You can also progress from a Level 2 qualification in Applied Science.

You will need to attend an interview at the college and we will request a school or college report.


This qualification is assessed by observation and assignment. It is essential evidence is gathered in a portfolio of competence to show that you have met all the relevant criteria for each unit.

To receive the qualification you must complete all the designated units as a pass grade and achieve minimum points scored (108 points).

Future opportunities


If you want to go straight into employment after completing this course you could work in a research laboratory, a quality control laboratory, a hospital laboratory, a materials testing laboratory, a forensic science laboratory, a laboratory within an educational establishment or an environmental science laboratory.

Further Study

This qualification fits across a broad range of potential science specialisms, not just forensics, for example (dependant on modules studied) careers in criminology, teaching, and psychology. In addition this qualification can provide entry onto generic and specialist science based degrees such as nursing, pharmaceutical science, forensics and veterinary nursing, biology, chemistry or biomedical science. Entry may be dependent on UCAS points and modules studied and can vary from university to university (please check individual universities for further information). The Extended Diploma in Science attracts up to 420 UCAS Tariff Points.
