Course description

OCR AS Level Critical Thinking

Critical Thinking is a skills-based rather than content-based subject. It develops the ability to interpret, analyse and evaluate ideas and arguments and supports thinking skills in all subject areas, from arts and humanities to sciences. The skills involved in Critical Thinking include:

•       analysing arguments

•       judging the relevance and significance of information

•       evaluating claims, inferences, arguments and explanations

•       constructing clear and coherent arguments

•       forming well-reasoned judgements and decisions

Course content

AS Level

AS Level is offered as a stand-alone qualification. It is made up of two mandatory units:

Unit 1: Introduction to Critical Thinking (Written Paper; 1 hour 30 mins; 50% of AS Level marks)

•       The language of reasoning

•       Credibility

Unit 2: Assessing and Developing Argument (Written Paper; 1 hour 30 mins; 50% of AS Level marks)

•       Analysis of argument

•       Evaluating arguments

•       Developing one’s own reasoned arguments


Entry requirements

No specialist prior knowledge is required.

As this qualification is optional and taken voluntarily, students must be committed to study in their free time and work independently with the support of a Senior Tutor.

Future opportunities

Critical Thinking develops students’ ability to look at arguments and examine the flaws and problems in those arguments. It will benefit students in all their subjects. It is particularly useful for students who wish to take the Law National Aptitude Test and Biomedical Aptitude Test. These tests are essential for students who wish to study law or medicine. It is also an excellent preparation for the Oxbridge tests.
