Hairdressing Advanced Apprenticeship at Gateshead College
If you are creative, like working with people and have lots of ambition, then hairdressing could be for you. You need to be aware of the different roles within the salon and have good hand and eye co-ordination, ideally combined with artistic/creative skills.
Advanced Apprentices take their hairdressing knowledge and practical skills to a higher level by developing their cutting and colouring skills so they can be more creative and able to carry out all the latest fashion techniques – and maybe even determine the fashion looks of the future.
The advanced apprenticeship will also allow junior stylists to advance in their creative and business skills.
On this Apprenticeship you will spend a lot of time on your feet. It is important you look smart (and have an even better hairstyle).
Good communication plays an important role too – you will need to understand exactly what your customer wants in order to make them happy. Dealing face to face with clients will require a good sense of humour and an amicable nature. As hairdressers rely heavily on repeat business, you will also need to be patient and tolerant.
The qualifications you will achieve are:
- NVQ Level 3 - Diploma in Hairdressing
- Functional skills - English 2 & Mathematics 2
- Additional Outcomes - Employment Rights & Responsibilities Personal Learning & Thinking Skills.
You will also get an Advanced Apprenticeship Completion Certificate when you have completed all the requirements.
- Functional skills – English, Mathematics and Information & Communication and Technology
- National Vocational Qualification (NVQ Level 2)
A career in hairdressing can offer you a world of opportunities.
Successful hairdressers can choose from a host of jobs from owning their own business, working in fashion, theatre, joining the team of a magazine, even to teach and assess others in hairdressing.
Some hairdressing services involve the use of chemicals such as colouring, colour correction and perming.
Any predisposition to skin allergies or conditions such as occupational dermatitis, eczema and asthma may mean hairdressing is not a suitable career for you.
Colour blindness would restrict opportunities within the wide use of artificial colouring products.Creative colouring forms part of the NVQ level 3 requirements so the achievement of an NVQ may not be possible.
