Dance Instruction ISTD (DDI) Level 3 Diploma at South Downs College

Course description

This course is for students who wish to gain valuable teaching skills in tap and modern theatre. It equips students with the knowledge to teach the graded syllabus up to grade S.

The course allows students to study two genres over two years and can be studied alongside three AS/A levels (one could include a Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma) or a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts Dance and Musical Theatre.

 

Course content

You will concentrate on 3 units that will combine both practical and theoretical aspects.

Unit 1 – Observation and Understanding of Learning Techniques.
Unit 2 – Promotion of Health & Safety in Dance.
Unit 4 – Dance Practise and the relationship between Music and Dance in a chosen Dance genre/s.

Unit 3 – This is the vocational Graded Examination in Dance (Intermediate Level), which you will need to gain entry on to the course.

 

Entry requirements

Students are required to be an intermediate level (or above) in the chosen genre(s) you wish to follow, in order to gain entry onto this specialist course.

You will also need the appropriate grades for entry on to your full-time course. For AS/A Levels you need a minimum of 2 B’s and 3 C’s at GCSE and for the BTEC Extended Diploma you need a minimum of 5 A’C’s. For both courses Maths and English are a requirement.

Assessment

You will be assessed through teacher observation in class, a portfolio and an external assessment by ISTD.

Financial information

You will need appropriate dance wear for each genre you intend to study. You will also be required to get the ISTD syllabus handbooks

Future opportunities

Completion of the two year course will gain the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing Diploma in Dance Instruction (DDI) qualification.

This is the first stage of a fully accredited professional teaching career, recognised at dance schools. You may wish to follow the ISTD Diploma in Dance Education (DDE) Level 4 qualification to be able to teach your chosen genre(s) up to intermediate level.
