BTEC Travel and Tourism at Ruislip High School

Course description

In 2011 it was estimated that travel and tourism accounted for 9% of employment and 10% of the businesses in the UK (Source: Visit Britain, 2011 report).

BTEC Travel & Tourism is a Level 2 course, roughly equivalent to two GCSEs. It is a fantastic opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of the travel and tourism sector as well as gaining work related skills in areas such as customer service. The qualification is 75% coursework-based and 25% exam-based. Students can complete the course at pass, merit or distinction level depending on the quality and number of assignments they complete at the required standard, as well as how they do in the written exam.

Course content

Year 10

The units studied in Year 10 are as follows:

  • The UK travel and tourism sector (exam)
  • UK travel and tourism destinations

Students will be take the written exam at the end of Year 10.

These units enable students to understand the business behind travel and tourism and its importance to the UK economy, as well as continuing to develop their geographical knowledge of the world. They will also learn skills in how to deal with customers which will be desirable to future employers.

Year 11

In Year 11 students study the following units:

  • International travel and tourism destinations
  • Factors affecting worldwide travel and tourism

These units will give students skills and an in-depth knowledge of working within the travel and tourism industry as well as understanding of worldwide holiday destinations. 

Assessment

Students are assessed throughout both years. There will be approximately three assignments in each of the three coursework units studied. Students are given deadlines for completed work and during this time formative feedback can be given to help and guide students. If students fail to meet their required grade for an assignment they may be granted a re-submission. However, we do try to limit this to one per student.
