English Language AS Level at West Kirby Grammar School
WHY CHOOSE ENGLISH LANGUAGE?
Language is central to our lives; it helps define our identity and relationship with others; it is the medium through which we achieve our aims and intentions; it is a means through which others act on us; it shapes our view of the world.
CONTENT - Advanced Subsidiary Level
Unit 1: How mode affects language; how children acquire spoken and written language
Unit 2: Coursework: The representation of individuals, groups and events in our language. Includes an investigation and original language production.
- Entry onto AS courses is conditional on you achieving at least five B grades at GCSE Level which must include the subjects you intend to study
- If you are starting a new subject at AS Level such as Psychology or Film Studies you must achieve a B grade in a related subject at GCSE Level such as Science or English
- All students must also achieve at least a C grade in Mathematics and English Language
One written examination and a piece of coursework
WHAT CAN I DO WITH ENGLISH LANGUAGE?
This is a qualification which is relevant to careers in Law, Business, Languages, Journalism and many others where analytical and creative skills would be valuable.
WHAT DO I NEED TO START THE COURSE?
Students will need a grade B or above in English Language at GCSE. You need a genuine curiosity about the way language works and how it has developed, an interest in writing, and a willingness to read all sorts of material, from novels and short stories to newspapers and magazines. You should also be willing to participate actively in class discussions and group work.
