Plumbing Intermediate Apprenticeship at Colchester Institute

Course description

This course gives a detailed overview of system installation and testing, commissioning and de-commissioning systems. By the end of the course, you should be trained in basic plumbing skills, including:

  • System Installation and Testing
  • Commissioning and De-commissioning Systems
  • Copper and LCS Bending
  • Soldering Skills
  • Hot and Cold Water Supplies
  • Central Heating
  • Sanitation
  • Health and Safety

As part of the Apprenticeship framework you will also study Employment Rights and Responsibilities, and Functional Skills Level 1 in ICT and Level 2 in English and maths.

Entry requirements

Candidates should have a strong interest in the area of plumbing. You will need to be dedicated and committed to your study and be responsible for your own learning. You will be required to attend an interview with the Work Based Learning team and be asked to complete basic skills assessments in literacy and numeracy, followed by a paper based trade test. Students on this course are required to be employed in a suitable work placement with a plumbing company. Two GCSEs (grades A*-C) in maths, English or science would be also desirable, but are not essential.

Future opportunities

Following further training, career pathways may include technician, designer or estimator.

Possible progression to an Advanced Apprenticeship. Entry into the Gas Industry.
