Product Design - Textiles AS Level at Parkside School

Course description

The distinguishing feature of Product Design is it’s practical nature. Students are offered the opportunity to gain a positive experience from working with a wide variety of Textile Materials. The practical problem solving processes encourage independent learning, creativity and innovation.

Course content

AS/A2 level students have the opportunity of applying their knowledge, understanding and skills to design and make products to suitable specifications.Design work will require thinking, creating, inventing, predicting, experimenting, decision making, constant evaluation and modification.

Making activities may take many forms, ranging from early experiments, through experimental mock-ups, prototypes, scale models and trials to a final marketable product.

 

 

Entry requirements

It is desirable to have GCSE design technology at Grade C or above as this provides a firm basis of skills and knowledge on which to build.

Hard work and a genuine interest in textiles and fashion are required.

 

 

Assessment

Unit 1 - Materials, Components and Application, written paper (2 hours)

Unit 2 - Learning through Designing and Making, coursework (approx 50 hours). A sketch book is used to explore a range of techniques in both design and making and a design and make task with a set theme.

 

Future opportunities

The course provides an excellent foundation for further study in Design and Textiles at A level
