Performing Arts (Dance at Studio 79) : BTEC Level 2 Diploma (FULL TIME at Studio 79) at Regent College

Course description

Who is this course for?
Students wishing to pursue a career as a professional dancer or choreographer with a basic understanding of the dance styles and disciplines required to make it in the Performing Arts Business.

Course content

Run in collaboration with Studio 79, this one-year course combines practical and theoretical assignments and is heavily performance based. You will be required to work in groups as well as individually on various assignments and actively provide creative input along the rehearsal process to produce exciting and dynamic new work for your projects.

Learners will gain an overview of the dance industry, as well as obtaining practical skills essential to understanding performance, technical training, rehearsal and group work. They will also develop key skills in IT, Communication, The Performing Arts Business and obtain an understanding of Health & Fitness.

You may be required to study GCSE Maths and English at Regent College on days when you are not timetabled for practical lessons at the Studio. Units studied during the year at the Studio include:

• Performing Arts Production
• Performing Dance
• Contemporary Dance
• Jazz Dance
• Tap Dance
• Musical Theatre Performance
• Commercial Dance We offer regular timetabled performances including
The Christmas Show, Mass Movement, Move it!, and the college ends the academic year with a performance at Leicester’s prestigious Curve Theatre.

When college productions are scheduled, there will be extra rehearsal sessions added to the timetable, which you will be expected to attend.

Additional opportunities Alongside the regular timetabled activities, there are numerous opportunities throughout the college year, we encourage learners to get involved with outside activities to further their understanding of the performing arts industry and gain performance experience in the relevant fields. Highlights from previous years have included:

• School Visits for Workshops and Performances
• Professional Workshops.
• Festival work – Leicester Pride, Caribbean Carnival, St. Georges Festival, One Leicester
• Auditions for various professional work around the UK,
• Additional Work with touring professional companies/choreographers.

Entry requirements

Applicants should possess a positive and disciplined attitude and express a strong interest towards the performing arts. Experience of performance work is advantageous but not essential. Applicants should be able to successfully demonstrate their dance skill and potential.

Entry is via a practical audition followed by a formal interview

Assessment

You will be taught through a variety of methods including practical demonstrations, lectures and your own research. You will be continually assessed during your course through a series of practical performance and work-related assignments.

Learners will have opportunity to complete exam work in BTDA Jazz and ISTD Ballet and Tap.

Future opportunities

This course offers progression onto the Dance - BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts (Dance) or the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre) and results in a qualification equivalent to four GCSEs.
