Media Studies A Level at Helston Community College

Course description

You’ll need to be a keen consumer of a range of media throughout the course. Creative-minded students also tend to really enjoy media production work. This means being prepared to study and engage with many media texts, some of which will be outside your usual consumption. One week you may need to follow the news in both print and broadcast formats, listen to the radio, or study web-sites in your study of the digital media. There are two coursework units involving practical production – you’ll need to be prepared to learn new technical skills, and to be self-reliant, well-organised and motivated to succeed.

Course content

The AQA specifi cation has put a heavy emphasis on the importance of media in a changing world and at the fore of the digital revolution. You’ll also study closely topics such as documentary or broadcast fi ction. In a simulation close to working in the real media industries, you’ll be given a brief requiring you to create two media products to produce in a choice of media platforms. You can choose to learn some web design, digital video editing in Adobe Premiere, or to use Photoshop and InDesign to produce really professional-looking print products. At A2, the creative freedom grows with a linked research and production piece on whatever interests you in the contemporary media.

You’ll develop a good understanding of who media audiences are, and why they consume what they do. You’ll learn about the media industry, who controls it, and how.

Entry requirements

You will need to have attained a Grade C in English Language to study the Media at AS and A2 Level. This is due to the level of writing as well as critical thinking required on the course. There is no need to have studied GCSE Media Studies, as the course is taught from scratch and does not.

A2 also involves practical work, although the emphasis changes to give you freer choice of topic together with a 2000 word essay. The exam at A2 also involves a combination of study of pre-set topics such as Identities and Digital Media, plus an unseen media analysis linked to these topics. assume any prior knowledge of the subject.


At AS Level, there will be an exam paper with two sections. One will require you to analyse a piece of media ‘unseen’ in a series of short answer questions. The second section consists of two longer answers, in which you will respond to questions based on your own topic case studies learnt in class. There are also two pieces of Practical coursework, with a written accompaniment.


Future opportunities

Media and Film Studies both develop you as a person. They both give you new skills and improve the ones you may already have. You’ll become a better critical thinker, able to spot fl aws in arguments and understand diff erent perspectives. You’ll become a more skilled writer, able to order ideas in a thoughtful and confi dent way. You’ll learn new technical skills. Many of our Media and Film students enjoy the subjects so much they go on to study one or the other further at University. There are a huge number of related courses available at HE, such as those with a vocational heart such as Television and Film Production, Broadcast Journalism or Advertising and PR to more traditionally academic courses such as Film Studies or Media and Cultural Studies. If University isn’t your thing, you’ll still fi nd you have plenty of skills which are attractive to employers.
