Health & Social Care Double AS level at Havering Sixth Form College

Course description

Students wishing to progress to nursing, midwifery or social work degrees would be suitable for this course.

It involves one day a week work experience placement as well as College-based studies on the remaining four days. The subject focuses on effective care and communication, patient care pathways, challenging life circumstances and educating children and young people. It is not suitable as a route into child care.

Course content

The subject focuses on effective care and communication, patient care pathways, challenging life circumstances and educating children and young people. The course totals 4 units – 2 in the first year and 2 in the second year.

You can expect to:

  • Develop independent research skills
  • Develop an understanding of the skills needed in a health and social care setting
  • Take part in discussions and give presentations
  • Attend work experience in a range of settings
  • Learn how to manage deadlines effectively

Entry requirements

One grade B and four grade Cs at GCSE, C Grade English and Maths GCSE, A keen interest in Health and Social Care, Satisfactory DBS check (previously CRB) as students will be on work placements with children & vulnerable adults. Approved for place following interview by a member of the Health & Social Care team.

Exam Board - AQA

50% Coursework, 50% Exam

Future opportunities

You can use this qualification as a route into a degree in adult nursing, children’s nursing or social work. Alternatively, you could go straight into social care employment, although you would be required to take a vocational qualification while working. It is not suitable as a route into child care.
