Engineering A Level at Kendal College

Course description

On the new A-Level Engineering course, you will study for 2 years for 5 hours per week.

The A-Level assessment includes all the topics covered over 2 years. You may also choose to complete your study after 1 year, in which case you will be assessed for the AS-level qualification. 

The course includes a wide range of topics in Engineering and will be taught through theory sessions and practical activities.

Course content

The A-Level in Engineering is designed to provide a broad educational basis for further education or for moving into employment within the engineering sector.

Subjects studied include Engineering Materials, Processes and Techniques, The Role of the Engineer, Principles of Design, Applied Engineering Systems, The Engineering Environment and Applied Design, Planning and Prototyping.

The aims of the AS & A-Level qualifications in Engineering are to:

- Develop an understanding of the nature and demands of different areas of engineering and related industries, including the social, economic and environmental impact these have on society;

- Develop a knowledge and understanding of the range of engineering technologies and the complex sub-groups that make up engineering and related industries;

- Apply knowledge of engineering technology in a variety of engineering contexts and to become safe users of equipment, techniques and procedures used in engineering contexts, including those dependent on ICT;

- Apply knowledge and understanding of engineering and its practical and technological aspects through project-based practical study of engineering design, production, commissioning and maintenance.

Entry requirements

You will need at least 5 GCSEs or equivalent at grade C or above, including Maths, Science and English. You will also need to have achieved at least grade B in GCSE Maths.

Assessment

In year one you will complete portfolio evidence for two internally assessed units and sit one externally set and marked 1.5 hour exam for one unit which will comprise the assessment for the AS award.

In year two you will complete portfolio evidence for two internally assessed units and undertake an externally set practical activities brief for one unit which will comprise the assessment for the A-Level award.

Future opportunities

This qualification provides progression to further education, training or employment. Appropriate further education includes Foundation Degrees or Degrees in Engineering-related subjects, Level 4 Higher Nationals in Engineering or NVQ Engineering programmes at Levels 3/4. This could lead to a wide variety of careers in a range of Engineering sectors, e.g. mechanical, electrical / electronics, aerospace, chemical, civil, marine, environmental, etc.

    • The majority of our courses are based at our main site. The College completed a £12.9 million new build project in 2008, which includes reception, conference and seminar suites, hairdressing salons and 250-seat cafe with external balcony. The site also features the stunning Construction and Heritage Centre, which features cutting edge facilities for carpentry and joinery, brickwork, plumbing and electrical installation.

      In October 2010 the College opened the South Lakeland Design Engineering Centre, which has brought engineering back to Kendal College. The Centre, designed in conjunction with local engineering firms including Gilbert Gilkes & Gordon Limited, features state of the art computer numerical control (CNC) machinery, including a 3D printer, which prints out solid models directly from CAD Drawings. The college is currently building a new, purpose-built engineering centre which will open in September 2014 and provide new courses in medical science, engineering and sustainable energy.
