Plumbing & Heating (Construction) Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship at East Surrey College

Course description

This Apprenticeship is designed for those who prefer vocational training and want to gain a qualification whilst working. It is intended for candidates wishing to start employment and learn the technical skills and knowledge required in the workplace.

Course content

Units/topics covered will include
• Tightness test, purge, commission and de-commission gas pipework up to 35mm 1¼ diameter in small natural gas installations
• Understand how to organise resources within BSE
• Understand and apply domestic cold water system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques
• Understand and apply domestic hot water system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques
• Understand and apply domestic central heating system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques
• Understand and carry out electrical work on domestic plumbing and heating systems and components
• Install, commission and de-commission gas pipework up to 35mm 1¼ diameter in domestic and small commercial premises
• Specific core installation and maintenance
• Understand core gas safety principles for natural gas within domestic building services engineering
• Maintain gas water heating and wet central heating appliances
• Install domestic gas water heaters and wet central heating appliances
• Understand and apply domestic sanitation system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques
• Install, commission, service and maintain domestic plumbing and heating systems

 

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for an Apprenticeship but you must be in paid work for a minimum of 30 hours per week. It is essential you have the right mind-set for working full time and studying at the same time. Having a can-do attitude, being flexible and reliable are also important. You must also be able to communicate effectively with others.

Assessment

For the competency units a portfolio of evidence is gathered at work, while carrying out operations and tasks. The knowledge elements are assessed through practical tasks carried out at college. There are also multiple choice exams that must be achieved. The Functional Skills qualification is assessed through a written, spoken or on-line test.

Future opportunities

This Apprenticeship has been designed to allow progression to a Level 3 qualification or Advanced Apprenticeship.

What qualifications will I get?
The Apprenticeship is made up of a number of qualifications that you will receive, which includes:
• The Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating – Gas Fired Water and Central Heating Appliances (this is a combined competency and knowledge qualification)
• English Functional Skills Level 2
• Maths Functional Skills Level 2
• Employee Rights and Responsibilities
• Responsibilities and Personal Learning and Thinking Skills.
Learners with GCSE results A - C in the relevant functional skill are exempt from this
 
Equipment needed:
Boots are required when at college and basic stationary equipment is also needed.element of the framework as they already have sufficient level of achievement.
