IT, software, web and telecoms professionals Apprenticeship Level 2 at Basingstoke College of Technology

Course description

The Apprenticeship framework provides the skills, knowledge and competence required to become an IT, Software, Web or Telecoms Professional in a wide range of job roles such as: IT Software Developer, Web Developer, Database Administrator, Telecoms and Network Engineer and Software Tester.

The Apprenticeship programme combines skills and knowledge with employment in an IT role, meaning that apprentices are paid throughout the programme. Apprentices can apply and improve their skills in the workplace to complement the instructor-led learning. This is a 12—14 month programme with learners attending college 1 day per week.

Course content

This Apprenticeship programme covers a range of practical skills and underpinning knowledge and includes the following components:

1. Level 2 Diploma in Professional Competence for IT & Telecoms Professionals (competence)

2. Level 2 Diploma in IT (knowledge)

Mandatory units are:

  • Working in the IT industry
  • Communicating in the IT industry
  • Computer Systems

Optional units include:

  • Supporting Organisations with IT
  • IT support
  • IT Fault Diagnosis and Remedy

3. Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT (Level 1)

4. Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)

5. Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) - mapped into the Diploma

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs grade A-C including English, Maths and ICT. Candidates must be employed in an IT related role.

Assessment

The Level 2 Diploma in Professional Competence for IT & Telecoms Professionals is assessed in the workplace via observations, collection of evidence, witness testimonies and professional discussions. The Level 2 Diploma in IT is assessed in college via assignments.

Financial information

If you are aged 16-18, tuition and registration fees are free. 
If you are aged 19 or over, tuition and registration fees are payable at the start of each year of study; please ask for details.
If you are aged 24 or over, you may be eligible for a Student Loan to assist with your fees; please ask for details.
