Course description

An A Level in art and photography is designed for developing your style and talent while learning a range of fine art and photographic techniques and approaches.

Course content

This A Level will cover a wide variety of media, allowing you the opportunity to develop your creative skills while learning new techniques and approaches within photography and art and design. You will be introduced to a variety of experiences in the areas of fine
art and photography that explore a range of two-dimensional and/or three-dimensional media, processes and techniques. You will explore both traditional and new media.

Entry requirements

  • Five GCSEs with at least 4 points (grade C) including English language and an art and design-related subject such as art, 3D design, textiles, photography or graphic design with 5 points (grade B). Please note: This does not include design and technology (textiles and graphics).
  • You will also need to be able to produce a portfolio of creative work to show the course tutor at interview.

You will need to attend an interview with the tutor before being accepted on to the course.


This course is assessed primarily by examination scheduled for May/June with some additional coursework assessment.

Future opportunities

A Fine Art A Level can help forge careers as an artist, designer, work in illustration, graphics or fashion design. It can also assist with careers in the media, film and television, marketing and textile industries or becoming a teacher.

Further study at university-level in photography, fine art or a related subject, or employment
