A level Art at Haywood Sixth Form Academy

Course description

What will I be doing?

Recording: extending your drawing skills.

Contextual Research:  extending your knowledge of artists and creating reference pages.

Experimenting:  with materials and techniques.

Developing your ideas: creating final pieces. You can choose to work either  two and three dimensionally.

Year 1 - AS Level  Art and Design

Externally set task

100% of the total AS Level

The early release paper will be issued on 1 January and will provide learners with a number of themes. Within the themes, there will be a choice of written and visual starting points, briefs and stimuli. A response should be based on one of these options.

Year 2 - A Level Art and Design

Personal Investigation

60% of the total A Level

Learners should produce two elements:

1) A portfolio of practical work showing their personal    response to either a starting point, brief, scenario or       stimulus, devised and provided by the leaner or centre.

2) A related study: an extended response of a guided minimum of 1000 words.

Externally set task 

40% of the total A level

15 hour controlled time (exam).

 

Course content

Year 1

Coursework Portfolio

Candidates produce a portfolio of work from starting points, topics or themes determined by their centre.

Controlled Assignment

3–6 weeks of preparation time plus 5 hour controlled time (exam)

Year 2

Personal Investigation

30% of the total Advanced GCE marks

60% of the total GCE A2 marks 100 marks

Candidates submit one major project that has a personal significance.

The investigation includes a related personal study that must be between 1000 and 3000 words.

Entry requirements

B Grade in GCSE Art and Design. C grade applicants will be considered on an individual basis.

Financial information

The course is open to anyone who is aged 16-18 on the 31st August,  in the year that the course starts

Future opportunities

This qualification supports progression into further and higher education, training or employment in a wide variety of disciplines

You can go onto study a BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design or apply for an Art related University course.
