Football Academy in partnership with Gillingham FC Community Trust at Goodwin Academy

Course description

The Football Academy is an opportunity for talented footballers to continue their development in the sport whilst studying for academic qualifications at Goodwin Academy, working in partnership with Gillingham Football Club Community Trust to create a potential pathway to employment via an apprenticeship programme.

The Academy places a high importance upon education and players get the best of both worlds by gaining qualifications which can enable them to keep their options open for a possible career in football, employment or to pursue further or higher education.

Players will receive 12 hours of football coaching each week. The coaching will take place at Goodwin Academy. Apprentices will also be placed throughout Primary and Secondary schools in the Deal and Dover area. The sports teaching apprentices will be working closely with classroom teachers and school sports co-ordinators to help with the delivery of PE provision within the placement school.

Students must choose academic courses alongside the Football Academy. These can be level 2 or 3 qualifications and can be either sport or non-sport related. There are also opportunities available for students to gain experience of coaching and officiating.

Liam Friend is the Head Coach for the Academy.

The Academy play competitive league matches on Wednesday afternoons against other Football Academies and Sixth Form Schools and Colleges. There will also be matches in the Kent Youth League on Sunday mornings for those players able to play football at Under 18 level.

Trials for the Academy will take place in May 2017 and students must gain the academic qualifications needed for their chosen courses as well as passing the trial.

There is an annual subscription which includes all registration costs, league and cup fees and a full training kit. Scholarships are available for those players who meet all the entry criteria but are unable to raise the subscription fee.
