Brickwork Level 1 Diploma at Stafford College
This course is aimed at school leavers and people not already working in the sector and who are considering making a career in Trowel Occupations. The programme includes both classroom and workshop content, with approximately equal emphasis on both forms of learning.
The following units are all mandatory and provide a good foundation for anyone working in the field of trowel occupations. Teaching will be split between theory and practical:
- Carry out safe working practices in construction
- Information, quantities and communicating with others
- Building methods and construction
- Carry out basic blocklaying skills
- Carry out basic bricklaying skills
- Carry out basic cavity walling
- Setting out and building basic masonry structures up to damp course level
The course also includes the following mandatory components:
- Functional Skills - Mathematics
- Functional Skills - English
- Functional Skills - Information & Communication Technology (ICT)
English & Maths
We are committed to helping students improve their skills in English and Maths. Students on a full-time course at College who missed out on GCSE qualifications at Grades A-C in these subjects at school will attend additional classes and receive support to enhance their grades. Depending on individual ability, students will work towards GCSE, City & Guilds or Functional Skills Awards to ensure that they have the qualifications needed to progress to University or employment
GCSEs grade E or equivalent including maths and english or level 1 numeracy and literacy.
Assessment in both practical and knowledge is on-going throughout the course. External assessment will take place at the end of the course in the form of an online multiple choice examination.

Successful completion of this course is one of the entry requirements for progression onto the Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying. It may also facilitate progression onto an Apprenticeship programme or employment in the construction industry as a bricklayer.
