Chemistry A Level (Linear) at Dereham Neatherd High School

Course description

Chemistry is the branch of science that deals with the composition, properties and behaviour of matter. Chemistry studies the atom and the ways in which interactions between atoms are related to the properties of chemical bonds formed between species. Chemists are concerned with the reactions between substances, their accompanying energy exchange and the laws that unite these phenomena.

Course content

AS In the first year students study some key areas of Chemistry to provide a firm foundation for further study.
- Atoms and Reactions, electrons, bonding and structure
- Periodic Table
- Basic organic concepts, hydrocarbons, alcohols, halogenalkanes
- Analysis
- Energy
- Resources

A2 In the second year the main chemical concepts are developed in greater depth.
- Rings, Polymers
- Methods of Analysis
- Chemical synthesis
- Equilibrium and energetics
- Transition Elements

Entry requirements

Minimum BBBBB including B in Maths and Chemistry (or additional Science) GCSE.


Two written exams and three internally assessed practical assessments.
