English Language and Literature A level at Coombeshead Academy

Course description

This course allows students to develop as independent, confident and reflective
readers and writers. They have a variety of opportunities to explore the relationship
of language and literature through a wide range of texts, involving critical reading
of and response to both literary and non-literary texts. There are opportunities for
writing for different audiences and purposes.
At AS and A Level students will develop the skills to:-
- apply relevant methods for text analysis, drawing on linguistic and literary
- apply varied strategies for reading and listening according to text type and
purpose for study
- identify and describe how meanings and effects are created and conveyed
in texts
- explore connections across a wide range of texts
- use English appropriately, accurately and creatively
- use a range of techniques to produce and evaluate the effectiveness of
texts for different audiences and purposes, informed by wide reading and
- make accurate reference to texts and sources

Entry requirements

Minimum grade B for English Language or English Literature GCSE


Apply concepts and methods from integrated linguistic and literary study as
appropriate, using associated terminology and coherent written expression
Analyse ways in which meanings are shaped in texts
Demonstrate understanding of the significance and influence of the contexts in
which texts are produced and received
Explore connections across texts, informed by linguistic and literary concepts and
Demonstrate expertise and creativity in the use of English to communicate in
different ways

Future opportunities

English Language and Literature have always been regarded by employers and
universities as qualifications of quality. Advanced reading and communication skills
are held in high esteem and are always in great demand.
As a route to Higher Education, English A Levels complement a range of degree
courses such as History, Politics, Law, Business Studies, Social Sciences, Psychology
and Philosophy, Media Studies and Film Studies.
As career enhancers, A Level English Literature and English Language and Literature
can open up opportunities for students wishing to join public services like the Police,
Welfare Agencies and Local Government. The courses are also ideal preparation
for careers in the Media, Marketing, Teaching and the Legal profession.
