Applied Science (QCF) Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Diploma at Farnham College

Course description

The BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science reflects aspects of employment within science organisations or organisations that use science and enable learners to develop practical scientific skills. This qualification will appeal to learners who prefer portfolio-based assessment covering a variety of scientific investigations.

 

Course content

Topics within the qualification cover areas of

  • laboratory science
  • forensic science
  • medical science
  • environmental science and
  • biological, chemical and physical science to provide a route to employment in the science industry or within organisations that use science.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths, English and a Science subject.

 

Assessment

100% coursework.

Future opportunities

Science degrees or employment in a science related industry such as working in forensic science, quality control technician/analyst in a production plant laboratory, medical physics technician supporting the use of x-ray and scanning equipment, developing new medical drugs, editing scientific publications or working in a biotechnology lab.

Further information

Protective clothing is lent to the students but many buy their own lab coat and eye protection.

It is recommended that students buy their own copy of the text books, although loan copies are available to borrow.

Trips are organised to local universities and industries to give students an insight into future opportunities in the field of science.
