A Level Modern Languages (French/German/Spanish) at Ricards Lodge High School

Course description

Travel broadens the mind and never more so than when you speak the language. Languages at A level offer you the fantastic opportunity to work towards becoming a linguist, but that’s not all. Languages are a great subject to study alone but also offer excellent opportunities alongside other subjects. This course is designed to give you a profound understanding of your chosen language. Not only will you know more about the mechanics of the language, grammar and vocabulary, but you will also learn how people live and use language on a day-to-day basis.

Course content

In the first year of AS level, you will study four topics: media, popular culture, healthy living/lifestyle and family/relationships.

These build on what you have studied at GCSE and cover a wide range of interesting and engaging issues. The common thread amongst these is discovering how people speak at a personal level and what their individual views are on these everyday topics.

In the second year (A2) you will study another four topics: environment, the multicultural society, contemporary social issues and a choice of two topics for independent study.

Entry requirements

Previous qualifications in the relevant language at GCSE grade B or higher.

Assessment

At both AS and A2 level assessment is in two parts: an examination which includes listening, reading and writing – accounting for 70% of the overall mark at AS and 35% at A2- and an oral examination which comprises 30% of the overall mark at AS and 15% at A2.

Future opportunities

Your A Level in MFL can help with several career paths. A language degree or having Languages as part of your degree will give you broader career options. Studying Languages teaches you all the skills that employers look for: analytical mind, good thought process, amazing memory capacity, fantastic cultural and intercultural awareness, good communication skills and great team player. Language skills are invaluable for those interested in translation, teaching, travel, tourism industry and diplomatic service.
