Course description

Sociology is the study of society and of human nature. It involves analysing how we and other cultures live on a day to day basis and the issues and problems we face. We will look at the various sociological perspectives on power, politics and cultural divides.

Course content

Sociology is an ever changing changing subject which takes a theoretical approach to looking at the practical working of society. If you want to understand what is happening in the world around you, this is the subject for you.

In the AS year we will be looking at families and households and how the structure and perception of family life has changed over time. We will also look at education and which groups are successful at school ie boys, girls, working class or differnet ethnic groups.

The A2 year will focus on belief systems and differing cultures that exist in our society. We will also look at crime and deviance in great detail and explore who the powerful groups in society are ie the media, politicians and pressure groups.

Entry requirements

We ask that you gain 5 A*-C's at GCSE and at least a B grade in GCSE English.

Future opportunities

Sociology is a great choice of subject for careers in social work, nursing or medicine. It can also be useful in many other careers such as marketing, advertising, PR, journalism, law and teaching.
