Functional Skills English at Level 1 and/or level 2 at Wakefield Adult and Community Education Services

Course description

To improve skills in English for everyday life and for progression into education, employment or training.

Course content

Skills that you will develop:

  • Spelling strategies
  • Correct use of punctuation
  • Grammar
  • Writing and reading skills
  • Speaking & listening skills


Entry requirements

The course is for learners who:

  • Have been assessed at level 1 or 2


  • Have a level 1 qualification


Score 70% at diagnostic assessment for the relevant level


You will be asked to attend an assessment and interview to make sure you start on the right course.

You will need to attend class every week.

Extra help may be available in class if needed.

Financial information

Classes are free.

The cost of a pen, a writing pad, dictionary and a folder. 

If you are on a low income, you may be eligible to apply for help to cover the cost of books, travel, refreshments  and equipment.

16-18s can apply for a bursary at enrolment(if eligible).

Future opportunities

Progress to a more advanced course e.g. GCSE English, promotion (if employed) a vocational career or university.
