Computer Science AS & A Level at Sir John Deane's College

Course description

Computer Science is always changing so there are always new skills to learn and applications to experience. You’ll use the industry’s leading software and hardware to lay the foundations for your future.

This is a highly academic and practical course with an emphasis on developing sought-after skills such as teamwork, problem solving and communication.

Course content

There is a strong emphasis on the programming practise, which will ultimately give you the ability to develop your own applications. You will also learn the importance of effective algorithm design and testing strategies to make your programs unbreakable.

You will cover topics such as the Binary number system, processor architecture, databases, networking and some elementary Boolean algebra. Software design and programming skills are taught in a high level language.

Assessment

As part of the assessment, students will complete a ‘free choice’ computing practical project, worth 20% of the marks, solving a real world problem using a high level programming language.

Financial information

You will have the opportunity to join either the Gifted and Talented or the programming club so you can enjoy aspects of programming beyond the A Level syllabus. There is a computer science debating society, tackling the social, economic and moral issues we face with modern technology. In addition to this, trips to “Computer Science in Action” in London are held where leaders of the industry introduce the newest solutions to tackle some of the most difficult problems in Computer Science.

Future opportunities

Many computing students go on to study Computer Science or related subjects in Higher Education. A successful computing student will have gained a broad range of transferable skills considered valuable to universities and employers.

Mastering the art of programming can lead you to employment in software engineering and app development.
