Course Content - AS

Factors Affecting Performance - 2 hour exam.

Anatomy and Physiology: Body composition and structure in relation to sport.  Acquiring Movement Skills: How we learn and improve both motor and perceptual skills.  Socio-Cultural Studies: Current trends in Sport and PE in the UK and around the world.


Practical assessment: Candidates are assessed in 2 activities, this can be in performance, leadership or officiating, there is also an oral analysis of performance examination.


Course Content - A2

Options Paper - 2½ hour exam.

Historical studies: How our times, games and sports are shaped by the past.  You will study the history of Sport and PE, which will help you to appreciate the contemporary scene.  Psychology: What strategies can we use to improve performance?  Exercise Physiology: How to develop fitness using exercise and training.  Practical assessment, candidates are assessed in 1 activity, effective performance, plus an oral examination on understanding performance.


Assessment              60% theory exam, 40% practical exam (of which 10% is oral exam)


Career Opportunities

Useful for careers or higher education courses in: PE/Sport, Sport Science, Recreation/Leisure Management, Physiotherapy, Teaching and accepted for careers such as Police Force and Armed Forces.


Entry Requirements

GCSE Grade B in English and GCSE Grade B in PE.  Students who have not studied GCSE PE can be interviewed by the Head of PE for suitability.  An ability to play, coach or officiate 2 sports at a good club level standard is essential.  In addition we would request a named referee (teacher or coach) to substantiate practical ability.
