Economics A-Level at Kendrick Academy
Economics is a wide ranging subject that is concerned with how scarce resources are allocated to satisfy infinite wants. It touches our daily lives as firms, organisations, individuals and governments face decisions about how to allocate their resources.
This course will provide you with a thorough understanding of key economic concepts and principles which you will learn to apply to a variety of situations. You will develop a wide range of skills including analysis of both data and text and evaluation of arguments which can be transferred beyond your study of Economics.
At AS level you will study how individuals allocate scarce resources to satisfy infinite human wants and how the price mechanism operates in local, national and global markets. You will also study market and government failure and associated government intervention. In addition, you will be introduced to key measures of economic performance such as inflation, unemployment and economic growth plus the economic policies used to manage the economy.
In Year 2 you will study the pricing and output decisions of firms in a variety of different contexts as well as evaluating the effectiveness of regulation and competition policies in their role of protecting the consumer. In addition you will study topics such as international economics, poverty and inequality, emerging and developing economies, the financial sector and the role of the state in the macroeconomy.
You will be expected to keep up with contemporary economic events on a global scale by reading newspapers, relevant journals and watching TV.
Economics complements the study of Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, History, Geography, Sociology, a Modern Foreign Language or English and it provides a good basis for the study of a range of subjects at degree level.
